LOSTELNAU, Sieur de. Le mareschal de bataille. Contenant le maniment des armes, les evolutions, plusieurs bataillons... divers ordres de batailles . Paris: Estienne Migon for Toussainct Quinet, 1647. 2 o (360 x 244 mm). Title and section titles printed in red and black, woodcut headpieces, tailpiece and initials, 184 diagrams of battle formations (including 8 folding) of which 135 printed in red and black and 49 in yellow, red and black, a few enhanced with small figurative woodcuts, 48 nearly full-page engravings of men-at-arms, THE ENGRAVINGS FULLY AND DELICATELY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Blanks N4 and Gg4 removed. (Occasional marginal finger-soiing, a few leaves slightly darkened, minor creasing to folding leaves, marginal dampstain mostly at end.) Contemporary speckled calf (rebacked preserving gilt backstrip, corners restored.) FIRST EDITION of an attractive and expensively printed manual on the handling of weaponry, military exercises and battle formations. The last section is a short treatise on the "considerations necessary to the sovereign prince before starting a war." Colored copies are rare. Brunet III, 1178-79; Lipperheide Qb43.
