Long Service Medals from the Collection formed by John Tamplin Six: Major John Yerbury Moggridge, late Royal Air Force 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals; Coronation 1953, these unnamed; Efficiency Decoration, E.II.R., Kenya, reverse inscribed, ‘Maj. J. Y. Moggridge’, mounted court style for wear, nearly extremely fine, scarce (6) £350-450 Footnote John Yerbury Moggridge was born in Plymouth on 27 February 1900. He was educated at Mount House School, Plymouth, and Clifton College. Leaving Clifton, Moggridge then joined the R.N.A.S. and was appointed a Temporary Probationary Flight Officer, Naval Wing (R.N.A.S.) on 10 March 1918. Following the formation of the R.A.F. he was granted the rank of Temporary 2nd Lieutenant (Airplane) R.A.F. on 7 October 1918. On 27 September 1919 he was transferred to the Unemployed List. After the war he attended the Potchefstroom School of Agriculture in South Africa, 1921-22. Whilst in South Africa he took part in the operations in the Rand Rebellion in 1922 After a period as Manager of the Cotton Section of the Notham Estates, Moggridge entered the Colonial Civil Service and worked in the study and control of the Tsetse Fly. He was appointed in 1930 as an Observer in the Department of Tsetse Research in Tanganyika. In 1932 he became a Field Experimental Officer and in 1936 an Entomologist in the Directorate of Tsetse Research. Before the Second World War Moggridge served in the Volunteers. As a Major he served in the British Military Administration of Somalia. In 1943 whilst on military service as a Civil Affairs Officer in the former Italian Somaliland, he performed a rescue for which he was awarded the Royal Humane Society Medal in Bronze At 1.30 p.m. on 21 May 1943 at the River Nebi Scebeli, Afgoi Railway Bridge, Somalia, a boy aged 15 called Ahmed Abdulai was trapped in a crib (superstructure) when it was struck by a large tree during work on the bridge. The boy was up to his thighs in mud, being trapped by the leg in splintered wood. The river was 68 feet wide, it was in flood, and the current 8 m.p.h. The rescue was 30 feet out, and in a depth of 9 feet; there was a swift current around the crib, and flesh had been torn off Abdulai’s leg in pulling him out. Moggridge, supervising work on the other side of the bridge, ran across, dropped down on to the crib and climbed down to the boy. He called for a rope with which he pulled the boy further up, grasping his hand. Two natives held the crib, another native holding Moggridge’s hand just long enough for the boy to be got clear, Moggridge jumping himself, just as the crib wheeled over and was swept downstream After the war he returned to his entomological work, being appointed Director of the Tsetse Control Department in Uganda, 1 August 1948. An author of several entomological works, he retired in 1954. He was awarded the Coronation Medal 1953 (Uganda Gazette 3 June 1953) and the Efficiency Decoration (Kenya) (The Official Gazette of Kenya 16 February 1954). He tragically died on 28 February 1980, taking his own life whilst the balance of his mind was disturbed; his wife having died the day before The Efficiency Decoration, by J. M. A. Tamplin, lists 29 Efficiency Decorations (Kenya) awarded between the years, 1935-63. Sold with cloth ‘wings’, a photograph of the recipient and copied research.
