Long Service Medals from the Collection formed by John Tamplin A Second World War O.B.E. group of seven awarded to Colonel Frederick Grace Smith, Ceylon Medical Corps The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, O.B.E. (Military) Officer’s 2nd type breast badge, silver-gilt; Defence and War Medals; Coronation 1953, these unnamed; Efficiency Decoration, G.VI.R., 1st issue, Ceylon, reverse engraved, ‘Major F. G. Smith C.M.C.’; Efficiency Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue, Ceylon (Lieut. Colonel, O.B.E., E.D., C.M.C.) engraved naming; Ceylon Armed Forces Inauguration Medal 1955, unnamed, mounted court style for wear, good very fine and better (17) £350-400 Footnote Frederick Grace Smith was born on 22 February 1898. He was Doctor of Medicine and spent all his life working in Ceylon. He qualified as a L.M.S. (Ceylon); L.R.C.P. & S. (Edin.); L.R.F.P. (Glas.); and D.T.M. & H. (Lond.) He also served in the Ceylon Medical Corps, being appointed a 2nd Lieutenant on 2 November 1926 and advanced to Lieutenant in May 1927; Captain in October 1934 and Major in September 1935. He was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (Ceylon), the award published in the Ceylon Government Gazette of 14 August 1942. Later promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel, he served as Temporary Colonel, June-August 1943, while officiating as Officer Commanding the Ceylon Medical Corps. For his wartime services with the Ceylon Medical Corps, Smith was appointed an M.B.E. (Military) (London Gazette 1 January 1943) and was later promoted to O.B.E. (Military) (London Gazette 12 June 1947. In 1946 he was recorded as Honorary Surgeon to His Excellency the Governor-General of Ceylon and was appointed Officer Commanding the Ceylon Medical Corps. In 1948 he was awarded the Efficiency Medal (Ceylon), this notified in the Ceylon Government Gazette of 19 November 1948. In 1955 he was awarded the Ceylon Armed Forces Inauguration Medal as a a Colonel in the Ceylon Army Medical Corps (Reserve) (Ceylon Government Gazette 4 November 1955). The Efficiency Decoration (Ceylon) to Smith is featured in The Efficiency Decoration, by J. M. A. Tamplin. Sold with riband bar, six buttons, ‘CMC’ title and two cap badges; also with copied research.
