LONDON OFFERS HIS FIRST BOOK ["THE SON OF THE WOLF"] TO A PUBLISHER "Merely a letter of inquiry: Are your readers at work now? and if so, are you open to the consideration of a volume of short stories? ...will you kindly let me know when the submission of the MS. would suit you? The volume in question consists of nine short stories, of which six have been recently published in magazine form, one is now awaiting publication, and the remaining two are hunting publication. Each story is complete in itself, though the characters, places, conditions, etc., interlace. The scenes are laid in the Klondike Country. Needless to state, I have been there, and not as a summer tourist, either. The nine tales aggregate 49,600 words..." Dodd, Mead missed the boat (or the dogsled) on this and never did publish any of London's works. His first book -- London is describing the manuscript in this letter -- was published by Houghton, Mifflin in April 1900. Not in Letters , ed. K. Hendricks and I. Shepard, and presumably unpublished.
