Flown Apollo 15 LM Falcon Identification Plate. Rectangular 5¼ by 1¾ inch metal plate with a color Grumman logo, mounted on an 11 by 10 inch wood display plaque. The ID plate is displayed below a metal die-cut of a Lunar Module and a special presentation engraving. Apollo flight tradition had three Lunar Module plates carried in each LM for post-flight presentation to the crew by the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. The flown ID plate reads: "Apollo XV Lunar Module – 10, Col. D. Scott, Lt. Col. J. Irwin, Maj. A. Worden. Part No. LDW280-60001-1, Serial No. 001, Dsgn Cont No. Falcon – Endeavour, Contr No. NAS 9-1100. Launch Date 7-26-71, Splashdown 8-7-71. MFG BY Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp., Bethpage, New York, FS Code 26512." A small circle between the letters "U" and "S" bears a triangular inspection stamp that reads: "S NASA 23B." Prior to presenting this LM ID plate to Astronaut Irwin, Grumman mounted it with a brass plate with the wording: "APOLLO XV LUNAR MODULE – 10, 'OH, SHE WAS THE BEST,' COL. D. SCOTT – LT. COL. J. IRWIN – MAJ. A. WORDEN." The "she was the best" comment was a voice transmission from the Apollo 15 crew to Mission Control just before they released LM-10 Falcon from Command Module Endeavour in lunar orbit after a three day stay on the moon. Flown LM ID plates are one of the most prized possessions of the Apollo flight crews, especially the lunar landing crews.
