LIVINGSTONE, David (1813-1873). Autograph letter signed ('David Livingstone') to Sir Richard Glyn, Bart, Newstead Abbey, 25 October 1864, 3 pages, 8vo , on a bifolium. ENQUIRIES ABOUT 'GARDEN ISLAND' AT VICTORIA FALLS. Having heard that Sir Richard has been to Victoria Falls, and that he saw a peach tree on Garden Island, Livingstone anxiously enquires 'whether any other fruit trees had sprung up as I planted some living orange trees and numbers of apricot stones and cashew nuts. The last named has leaves very like those evergreen trees on the opposite side of the chasm'. Livingstone thanks Sir Richard also for 'mending the hedge and clearing my initials -- the only ones I ever cut of my name in Africa'. 'Garden Island', the island at the centre of Victoria Falls, is now known as Livingstone Island: the explorer was taken to it by the Makololo on his first sighting of the falls; he revisited the island the following day to plant his garden and cut his initials.
