LIONEL ARRIVING AT A MONASTERY, miniature cut from Livre du Lancelot del Lac , in French, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
LIONEL ARRIVING AT A MONASTERY, miniature cut from Livre du Lancelot del Lac , in French, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Paris, c.1440] 94 x 93mm. A young man points out to Lionel, on horseback, the monastery, where a monk stands inside the entrance, on the verso 16 lines of text and one illuminated initial (one small and one minute hole at left side, one minute hole in ground behind horse's rear hoof, laid onto card surround, text visible on verso). Framed. Number 14 in the Alpine Club Gallery Exhibition, the miniature illustrates part of Bk IV, around 148.30, where the scribe followed a variant of the Vulgate Version. Lionel has asked to be guided to a place where he can hear mass: a perfect knight is, by definition, also a perfect Christian. The monk, carefully indicated at the entrance, presages the discovery of Galehot within. The text on the reverse roughly corresponds to Bk IV, 150 7 onwards. The Vulgate version simply relates that Lionel rode out early one morning: the illuminator has created an entrancing landscape, where the ground is scattered with tiny plants and flowers, yellow on the green ground and liquid gold on the grey earth.
