LINNAEUS, Carolus (1707-1778)--Elias Magnus FRIES (1794-1878) and Emma SCHENSON (1837-1913, photographer). In memoriam Caroli a Linné . [Uppsala]: s.n., [c.1864].
LINNAEUS, Carolus (1707-1778)--Elias Magnus FRIES (1794-1878) and Emma SCHENSON (1837-1913, photographer). In memoriam Caroli a Linné . [Uppsala]: s.n., [c.1864]. 15 albumen prints, mounted on card with printed frames and captions (light fading), letterpress leaf of captions in English (scattered spotting, light wear in margins). Loose as issued in the original cloth portfolio, morocco spine, sides with arabesque frame in gilt and blind, the front gilt-lettered, lined with watered silk (lacking ties, scattered spotting to silk). Provenance : L.W. Levin, Uppsala (bookseller's ticket). A RARE TRIBUTE TO LINNAEUS BY ONE OF HIS GREAT CHAMPIONS. ONE OF 'ONLY ABOUT 20 COPIES' (Soulsby), but possibly fewer: not in Tycho Tullberg's exhaustive catalogue of the portraits of his great grandfather. Fries, remembered today as the 'Linnaeus of Mycology', was the leading Swedish botanist of his period, and used his position as head of the botany department at Uppsala University to promote Linnaeus's systematic botany and commemorate his predecessor. The photographs show various sites, objects, and monuments associated with Linnaeus, and form a vivid testament to his influential achievements. Of the c. 20 copies suggested by Soulsby, 5 (possibly 7) are held by institutional collections. NOT IN TULLBERG, Linnéporträtt , Stockholm, 1907. Rowley, 'Bibliography of Medical Photographic Incunabula', www.artandmedicine.com/biblio/authors/Linnaeus.html; Soulsby, A Catalogue of the Works of Linnaeus , 1933 (2nd edition), 2733.
