LINDLEY, JOHN (1799-1865). Digitalium Monographia; sistens historiam botanicam generis, tabulis omnium specierum hactenus cognitarum illustratam, ut plurimum confectis ad icones Ferdinandi Bauer penes Gulielmum Cattley. London: Arthur Taylor for J.H. Bohte, 1821. 2° (475 x 335 mm). 28 hand-colored engraved plates by and after Ferdinand Bauer (22), John Lindley (5) and Franz Andreas Bauer (one, engraved by William Hooker), (some light marginal dampstaining at end, some spotting to a few plates). Contemporary roan and green cloth (1-in. chip to lower spine end, upper joint splitting, light wear to edges). Provenance : Henry George Herbert 2nd Earl of Carnarvon (1772-1833), Lord Porchester, vice-president of the Royal Horticultural Society (“For the Earl of Carnarvon with W Cattleys best complt,” presentation inscription by William Cattley on title.) FIRST EDITION , A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY inscribed by William Cattley (1788-1835), who financed this publication. John Lindley, botanist and horticulturaist, received an early education in his plants and gardening: his father was a nurseryman, albeit unsuccessful, and as soon as Lindley was fit to leave school he was sent to Belgium as a buyer for a London seed merchant. One of his first important acquaintances was Sir Joseph Hooker at whose house at Halesworth Lindley wrote his first work, Observations on the Structure of Fruits, published in 1819. Hooker introduced Lindley to Sir Joseph Banks, and the latter employed Lindley as an assistant librarian. Through Banks's eminent circle of friends and colleagues Lindley came into contact with most of the major botanists and horticulturalists of his day. He co-illustrated this monograph on the genus Digitalis (foxgloves) with one the greatest of all botanical artists, Ferdinand Bauer His prodigious energy and enthusiasm permeated all his work, and he was admired by contemporaries in both this country and abroad. Cleveland Collections 844 (GC copy this copy); Dunthorne 182; Great Flower Books , p.65; Nissen BBI 1200; Pritzel 5345; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 4638.
