An intriguing variety of flight paths plotted boldly in pencil by the famous aviator. There is a short run from West Virginia to Maryland, then a long line running north-northeast across Pennsylvania to New Jersey, with 50-mile markings ticked off, and some long-distance mileage totals noted in Lindbergh's hand: from 2,300 to 2,500 miles. Possibly this was the course that took him from San Diego to New York. Biographer Scott Berg writes: "In order to get The Spirit of St. Louis from California to New York, Lindbergh decided to stand by the trusty guides he had always used, Rand McNally railroad maps available in drugstores for fifty cents per state" ( Lindbergh , 101-02). A third plot moves westerly from New Jersey to West Virginia for 350 miles. A fourth line goes west from Warren County, New Jersey to Mercer County, Pennsylvania, while a fifth makes a short run northwesterly from Branchville, New Jersey to the lower tier of New York State, just west of Binghamton.
