LINCOLN, Mary Todd, First Lady . Autograph letter signed ("Mary Lincoln"), to Mrs. James W. White ("Dear Rhoda"), [Executive Mansion], Washington, D.C., 28 November [probably 1861]. 2 pp. 160 x 205 mm . On stationery with "L" monogram on top of first page, tissue paper (a few tears, no loss of text) , full calf protective folder. MARY FROM THE WHITE HOUSE, ON "INFLUENCE...WITH THE AUTHORITIES." "My Dear Mrs. Moore Sickness in our family has alone prevented an earlier reply to your kind letter. I felt very much interested in the subject you addressed me & took the liberty of sending your letter to Judge Blair whom my husband informed me was the proper person to apply to - I return his note in reply and sympathize with you, in the disappointment you will naturally feel. I write you in haste as the President is confined to his bed today with a chill; with assurances of high regard and trusting you will apply to me, if any influence can avail, with any of the authorities ...." James White an Irish journalist, had published since 1840 the New York Freeman's Journal , banned from the Federal mails for its pro-Confederate editorial stance. In spite of that, Rhoda White became a frequent correspondent of Mrs. Lincoln. The matter referred to here may be the banning of the newspaper; the reference to "Judge Blair" is unclear. Apparently unpublished; not in the J.G. Turner and L.L. Turner edn. of Mary Todd Lincoln's letters (where the earliest letter to Rhoda White is dated 1864).
