An excellent and unusual piece of Lincoln ephemera, 3.4 x 7.5 in., made to look like a treasury note and imprinted The United States / Treasury Note & National Currency Depository / Legal Tender at Par Five Dollars and Series 986 / No. 64952 with jugate portraits of Lincoln and Johnson above their engraved facsimile signatures and Inauguration / Washington March 4th, 1865. Verso side contains advertisements for The N.Y. Independent Sanitary Commission, J.B. Westbrook & Co., 100 Sprint St., N.Y. and a circular diagram identifying the day of the week that corresponds to each date in 1866. We have not seen one of these notes previously and our research turned up only one similar note, but with a completely different verso imprint. Provenance:Property of Another Consignor Condition: Scattered minor stains and light wear at folds and edges.
