LINCOLN CABINET]. DENNISON, William (1815-1882), Governor of Ohio, Postmaster General . Autograph letter signed ("W. Dennison") to Charles Lanman Columbus, Ohio, 20 March 1867. 2 pages, 8vo . Enclosing a biographical sketch of Dennison's career written by S. Borke ArLee, 3 pages, 4to, ruled paper . THE STORY OF AN EARLY REPUBLICAN AND LINCOLN MAN. A letter from Dennison to Charles Lanman enclosing a biographical sketch, evidently for an update of Lanman's political reference work, Dictionary of the United States Congress and the General Government . The sketch notes that Lincoln's second-term Postmaster General was elected one of the Presidential Electors in 1852 and cast his ballot for Gen. Scott. "In February 1856 Mr. D. was a Delegate to the Pittsburgh Convention at which was inaugurated the republican Party, and a member of the Committee on resolutions which reported the Platform of principles." He chaired the Ohio delegation at the 1856 Republican conclave that nominated Frémont, and in 1859 won election as Governor of his state. "The civil war broke out during his term of office and his bold patriotism was of great service." When Lincoln asked for 11 Ohio regiments, the Governor told him there were 30 ready to take the field. "Gov. Dennison took his seat as Post Master General in Mr. Lincoln's Cabinet October 1, 1864 and remained in office under his successor until he resigned..." (2)
