LINCOLN, Abraham, President . Autograph letter signed ("A. Lincoln") to an unknown recipient, Washington D.C., 17 January 1863. 1 page, 8vo, "Executive Mansion" stationery, small tear to top margin, otherwise fine. A PROMOTION FOR A FORMER PRUSSIAN OFFICER SERVING IN THE UNION ARMY The President recommends a promotion for General August Willich, Brigadier General United States Volunteers in the Army of the Cumberland: "To-day Gov. [Oliver Perry] Morton [of Indiana] reminds me that Gen. Willich should be a Major General, & I think well of it myself upon more grounds than one." In spite of Lincoln's endorsement of the officer, Willich did not receive this promotion until after the war, when he was breveted Maj. General USV on 21 October 1865 for war service. August Willich (1810-1878), born in Germany, was the son of a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars. An officer serving in the Prussian army, he resigned and made his way through Switzerland and England, eventually settling in the US. He was commissioned Major on 13 June 1861, and part of his regiment routed Terry's Texas Rangers in November 1861 to gain great popular acclaim. Following the war, he was mustered out of the army in 1866 and returned to Germany.
