Lincoln") as President, [to Secretary of War Simon Cameron], [Washington, D.C.], 25 December 1861. 1 page, 4to, 6 lines with signature and date line, written on the verso of a 2-page autograph manuscript headed "Staff Appointments Irish Brigade," ENTIRELY IN THE HAND OF GENERAL THOMAS F. MEAGHER, discreetly silked, lightly browned . CHRISTMAS DAY APPOINTMENTS FOR MEAGHER'S "IRISH BRIGADE" President Lincoln approves several key staff appointments recommended by Meagher, including one for a sergeant who had saved Meagher's life in battle: "Within is a list of persons whom Gen[eral] T.F. Meagher wishes appointed to his staff. He is very anxious, & I promised him to urge compliance so far as consistent with the service. Please have Adj[utan]t Gen[era]l look to it..." Meagher recommends two staff appointments, Dr. Francis Reynolds of Dublin as Brigade Surgeon and, as Assistant Adjutant General, Sergeant Joseph McCoy of the Fifth Cavalry, who Meagher explains, had previously served in Texas and "saved the life of Colonel Meagher at Bull Run, having taken him from under the fire of the batteries at the imminent risk of his own [life]..." General Meagher (1823-1867) was in the process of forming the famous Irish Brigade in New York City, which he commanded from February 1862 until May 1863, during bitter fighting on the peninsula, at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, by which point the brigade was so decimated that it was disbanded. Meagher then commanded a provisional division under General Sherman at Atlanta. Resigning in May 1865, Meagher was awareded a gold medal by New York City for his services.
