Beschreibung:

LINCOLN, ABRAHAM Naval commission on vellum , engraved document with manuscript annotations, placing Herbert B. Tyson on the active list as a Lieutenant, effective August 1, 1862. Single vellum sheet, 17 x 14 inches (43 x 36 cm), with several engraved vignettes, secretarially annotated with the details of the appointment, signed by Abraham Lincoln below the main text on the right, and by Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy at the left, dated February 21, 1863, with affixed seal. Originally folded in sixths, leaving light creases (as usual), vellum slightly wrinkled and lightly toned. The recipient, Herbert Benezet Tyson, was one of thirty-two members of the United States Naval Academy's class of 1862 ordered into active service in May 1861. He served as lieutenant on the U.S.S. Hartford, serving under the redoubtable David G. Farragut. Tyson was aboard the Hartford during that ship's successful engagements at New Orleans and Mobile Bay. Later in his career, he served on the U.S.S. Connecticut on a Caribbean cruise in 1865.
