LINCOLN, Abraham. Autograph endorsement signed ("A. Lincoln"), as President, Washington, 11 January 1865. 1 page, oblong (cut from a larger letter), Lincoln's endorsement written upon the verso of the letter . Matted and framed. "LET THESE MEN TAKE THE OATH OF DEC. 8 1863 & BE DISCHARGED." A fine example of Lincoln's readiness to parole and pardon former Confederates or Confederate sympathizers who were willing to take the oath of allegiance set forth in his 8 December 1863 Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction. The oath called for petitioners to solemnly swear before Almighty God that they would "henceforth faithfully support, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of the States thereunder; and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all acts of congress passed during the existing rebellion with reference to slaves...and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all proclamations of the President made during the existing rebellion having reference to slaves...So help me God."
