LINCOLN]. ABOTT, ABOTT A. [Cover title:] The Assassination and Death of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America, At Washington, on the 14th of April, 1865. New York: American News Company, 121 Nassau Street 1865. 12pp., 8vo, stiched as issued, stitching loose at lower portion of spine, minor soiling and tiny tear at top of cover. Title printed in various decorative types, each page within black mourning borders, "Price 15 Cents" at top of title. Monaghan 372 ("Contemporary dispatches and observations"). The text recounts the events of the evening of April 14th up until the arrival of the telegram at 9:30 a.m., April 15, which announced the President's death. On p.11 Abbot recounts that "as soon as the news was published in the New York papers it spread like wildfire....Newspapers were impossible to be obtained after eight o'clock at any price....The city is hung in mourning. All business is suspended." It is likely this ephemeral pamphlet was issued on April 15 or not long afterwards, since it contains none of the reports of the pursuit of Booth and the other conspirators.
