First two issues with woodcut title vignette, 1865-1867 and 1872 with wood-engravings in text, diagrams throughout. 1865 with ‘Misprints and Errata’ slip. (1872 lacks pp. 1–16 and 117–168; 1878 lacks pp. 209 -211 (the Laws) and rear advertisements; 1875 without rear advertisement leaf; pp.145/146 of 1883 cleanly torn.) Uniform modern green cloth, preserving original green wrappers (some wrappers worn, 1865 and 1873 lack rear wrapper). Provenance : W.G. Grace (front wrapper of 1865 inscribed ‘W G Grace to be returned’, title of 1865 also signed by Grace; this volume and 8 others in the set sold by Bearne’s, Exeter, Important Cricket Books from the Collection of W.G. Grace, 11 July 1996, lot 3, to Hancock) – H.L.T. Walker (inscription in 1872) -- C.P. Tregellas (inscription in 1881). A COMPLETE SET PART OWNED BY W.G. GRACE. The volumes for the years 1865-67, 1869-70, 1878-79, and 1882-83 are from the great cricketer’s library. P. 92 of the first edition of 1865 has the corner turned down and a passage marked referring to a match at Brighton in July 1864 which the 15-year-old W.G. ‘did not leave until he had scored 170 runs’. The same volume is twice signed by Grace and gruffly inscribed ‘To be returned’. All volumes of this set are with the front wrappers and all save two with the rear wrappers of ‘the green Lillywhite’. John Lillywhite, brother of Frederick, was editor from 1865 until his death in 1874; the final volumes were edited by Edgar S. Pardon.
