LICHTENSTEIN, Henry. Travels in Southern Africa, in the years 1803, 1804, 1805, and 1806 , translated by Anne Plumptre, London: B. Clarke for Henry Colburn, 1812-1815. 2 volumes, 4° (265 x 210mm.), engraved portrait frontispiece, folding engraved map, 8 plates, including one folding (neat repairs to 2 plates, some light browning), modern old-style blue calf gilt, spine in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-pieces (lightly faded), t.e.g. FIRST EDITIONS IN ENGLISH, first published in German in 2 volumes (Berlin, 1811-1812). Lichtenstein arrived in Table Bay on December 23rd 1802, employed as tutor to the son of the new Governor of the Cape Colony General Janssens. 'There is an account of Janssens' travels to Kaffaria, and of subsequent journeys through the western and northern parts of the colony.. and much information respecting the wild animals and natural features of the country traversed... The second volume gives particulars of the return journey from Graaff-Reinet, together with extracts from General Janssens' journal, and accounts of further journeys to Zwellendam, and the countries inhabited by the "Bosjemans, Corans, and the Beetjuans," and concludes with a narrative of the capture of the colony by the British, and of the author's return to Europe in June 1806'.
