LIBER AMICORUM. The liber amicorum of Eberhard Elias Adam Luck, entries at Nuremberg, Mannheim and Coburg, 1738-1745, six drawings in pen and ink, of which three coloured in watercolour, mottoes referring to love, virtue or medicine, a number of other entries without illustration, altogether 20 pages, oblong 8vo ; genealogical notes, 1890s, on a further 35 pages, and blanks; original calf, gilt, lacquered (worn at edges), in contemporary slip case (worn and discoloured). The illustrations include an attractive image of Cupid fishing for hearts in a stream, in a pierced foliate border, with the motto 'Cupido der kleine Knab Nim[m]t mein Hertz, und alles waß ich hab'; an accomplished image of a pyramid, indicated by a female figure, in a circular border with the motto 'Virtus sola post funera vivit'; an unusual depiction of an apothecary reclining in a laboratory furnished with a furnace and retorts, a globe with symbols of his profession and the words 'Omnia Gloria Dei, et Hominib[us] Salut'; a depiction of Hermes and Death illustrating the power of medicine; and drawings illustrative of the mottoes 'Spes deceptrix' and 'Deo et Amico'. The majority of the entries are by student apothecaries in Nuremberg, April 1738, or Mannheim, 1739-1740.
