Beschreibung:

LIBER AMICORUM of Friedrich Nagel, compiled primarily at Halle and Berlin, with an UNRECORDED ORIGINAL SELF-PORTRAIT IN OIL BY FRIEDERIKE JULIE LISIEWSKA dated Berlin 1794. Manuscript on paper. 1794-1800. Oblong 8° (115 x 180mm). 111 leaves, including a 4-leaf index of contributors at end (not comprehensive). Three engraved coloured "momentoes" with flaps concealing verses printed on silk, 4 other engravings, one plate of engraved musical staves with MS "Canzone" by Patzig, fine silhouette of a man in a ribboned Perücke, 7 drawings in pen and wash or watercolour, and oil self-portrait by Lisiewska. Contemporary marbled calf, gilt border of leafy scroll tools, spine gilt with greek-key pattern, lettering-piece (chipped). A student at Halle and Berlin, Friedrich Nagel compiled this liber amicorum between 1794 and 1796; one or two additions were made in 1800-03. One of his friends was Friederike Julie Lisiewska, who contributed an oil on paper self-portrait, writing "bei Erblickung dieser kleinen Skizzen, errinnern Sie sich, Ihrer ergebensten Freundin", dated Berlin, 10 Oct. 1794. Lisiewska, one of an extended family of artists, had the previous year been accepted to the Berlin Academy. Her father, Christian Friedrich Reinhold (d.1794) was a portrait painter employed at the court of Friedrich Wilhelm I, and it was on the basis of a portrait she painted of her father which gained her admission to the Academy (Thieme-Becker). Her aunt, Anna Dorothea (d.1782), was also a portraitist in Berlin. Two other self-portraits by Lisiewska are known: a later one (1820) at the German National Museum, Nuremberg, and a youthful one once in the W. von Dallwitz colletion in Berlin. The present self-portrait is otherwise unrecorded. The subjects of the remaining drawings are: 1). A wayfarer and a cavalry officer entitled :"Das Lied vom braven Manne u. Bürger" by W. Küster; 2). classical ruins by Menrath; 3). playing cards by Schloenbach; 4). garden urn by Caroline Nagel; 5) a wedding dance by Eckoldt; 6). an angel holding the initial "N" by Blankenhagen; 7). funerary urn by Heinrich Krahmer.
