Lewis (Wyndham).- Cabaret Club. The Cave of the Golden Calf , 6pp., printed in orange, illustrations and decorations by Wyndham Lewis expert and unobtrusive repairs to margins, with application form loosely inserted, also Sunday Theatre schedule for October and November, printed in black and illustrated by Lewis and typed advertisement for coming Sunday evenings at the Cabaret Club, original cream wrappers printed in orange with designs by Lewis, some light browning, expert and unobtrusive repairs to extremities, small stain to upper cover, [cf.Morrow & Lafourcade B1], 4to, [September 1913]. ⁂ An exceptional rarity, one of Lewis' earliest appearances in print. Morrow & Lafourcade's bibliography lists the brochure for the second season of the club, issued in September 1912, but not this one. The Cave of the Golden Calf opened off Regent St. in 1912 situtated in the basement of a cloth warehouse, England's first artists' cabaret club. It was founded by the bohemian Viennese Frida Strindberg, second wife of the playwright, as an avant-garde rival to the Cafe Royal and she employed Jacob Epstein Eric Gill Wyndham Lewis Spencer Gore and others to decorate it. Members of the committee included Arnold Bennett, Lord Dunsany, Haldane Macfall and Arthur Machen. The club closed in 1914 having gone bankrupt but the building later became a Post Office and is in the background of the famous cover of David Bowie's album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars . The advertisement includes an announcement for a "Futurist Supper" including a talk by Marinetti on "L'Art des Bruits".
