Disbound. FIRST EDITION, THE FIRST PRINTED ROSTER OF THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION AND THE FIRST PRINTED VERSION OF THE BILL THAT MADE COMPENSATION TO LEWIS AND CLARK. A very rare pamphlet containing a roster of the men who carried out one of the most remarkable North American overland explorations. The folding table is headed "A Roll Of the men who accompanied captains Lewis and Clarke [sic] on their late tour to the Pacific Ocean, through the interior of the continent of North America, shewing their rank, with some remarks on their respective merits and services." Printed in four columns, its lists 29 individuals. In the column headed "Remarks" several members of the party are particularly noted, such as Nathaniel Pryor ("Deceased the 20th of August 1804; a young man of much merit..."), Joseph and Reuben Field ("two of the most active and enterprising young men who accompanied us. It was their peculiar fate to have been engaged in all the most dangerous and difficult scenes of the voyage..."), Toussaint Charbonneau ("A man of no peculier merit; was useful as an interpreter...") and George Drulyard ("A man of much merit... useful from his knowledge of the common language of gesticulation, and his uncommon skill as a hunter and woodsman..."). Also noted are Patrick Gass and Jean Baptiste Le Page. The text prints letters from Willis Alston, Henry Dearborn and Lewis. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current , only three copies have sold in the last thirty years: Swann Galleries, 15 December 2003, lot 238 and 21 October 2004, lot 241 and Christie's New York, 14 June 2006, lot 495.
