Comprising: "Discoveries abroad have assisted to encourage discoveries in the vast country subjected to the United States. The letter from Capt. Lewis, to the President, from Louisiana, is before the public. It was accompanied with specimens of earth, salts and minerals, with a chart and journals. Good hopes appear to be entertained of a safe arrival at the Columbia river, and a passage to the Great Ocean..." In Boston Weekly Magazine . Vol. III, no. 42. Boston, Saturday Evening, 10 August 1805. 4 o. Bifolium. The Lewis letter mentioned is that to Jefferson which was published in his message of 19 February 1806 (see Wagner-Camp-Becker 5). Jefferson's message to Congress contains notice of Lewis and Clark: "A state of our progress in exploring the principal rivers of that country, and of the information respecting them hitherto obtained, will be communicated so soon as we shall receive some further relations which we have reason shortly to expect" Lewis's letter was published with Jefferson's State of the Union on 2 February 1806 (see following newspaper printing). "Captain Lewis. To the Senate and House of Representatives of the U. States... Feb. 19 1806." In: The Repertory . Vol. III, no. 19. Boston, Friday 7 March 1806. Folio. Bifolium.
