Comprising: "It is reported that Capt. Lewis, the president's private secretary, is to proceed in a few weeks on a journey towards our south-western frontiers, and that his object is of a political nature..." In: American Mercury . Vol. XIX, no. 978. Hartford: Elisha Babcock, Thursday, March 31, 1803. Bifolium. The notice is found on page 3, columns 2-3. "Georgia. Louisville, Oct. 29. Capt. Clark and Mr. Lewis left this place one Wednesday last, on their expedition Westward. We have not been enabled to ascertain to what length this rout will extend, as when it was first set on foot by the President, the Louisiana country was not ceded to the United States...they are to receive further instructions in Kahokia. It is, however, certain that they will ascend the main branch of the Mississippi as far as possible; and it is probable they will ascend it. They have the iron frame of a boat, intended to by covered with skins... About 60 men will compose the party." In: The Hive . Vol. I, no. 13. "The Executive have received advices from Capt. Lewis, who is on this expedition towards the source of the Mississippi and Missouri--he and his party were in good health. The public may promise themselves much information on this undertaking." In: Boston Weekly Magazine . Vol. II, no. 25. Boston, Saturday Evening, 14 April 1804. 4 o. Bifolium. "Capt. Lewis, who had been sent by the President of the United States, to explore the territory of Louisiana, was at Pittsburg, on the 5th May last, on his return to the City of Washington, accompanied by twenty Indian Chiefs." In: Boston Weekly Magazine . Vol. II, no. 34. Boston, Saturday Evening, 16 June 1804. 4 o. Bifolium. A VERY FINE COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY NEWSPAPER ACCOUNTS, ALL OF WHICH ARE QUITE SCARCE.
