Beschreibung:

"Leviathan" group – collection of catalogues and two artists' books by Michail Grobman, 1972-1984. Michail Grobman (b. 1939), Israeli painter and poet, native of Moscow; one of the founders of the "Second Russian Avant-Garde" in the Soviet Union. Immigrated to Israel in 1971 and in 1975 founded the "Leviathan" group together with Avraham Ofek and Shmuel Akerman. The group's style combined contemporary art with Judaism, symbolism and metaphysics. In the manifest- titled: "Leviathan Declaration" – published in 1976 Grobman defined the group's goal: "Our joint performance is a preliminary attempt to create a comprehensive national style, combining the spirit of the new Israel…our political ground is Zionism. Our spiritual ground – Jewish mysticism. Three principles determine our artistic attitude: 1. Primitivism 2. Symbol 3. Letter". 1-2. Two booklets – Artists' Books by Michail Grobman, 1984. The booklets consist of various leaves, leaflets and documents, gathered and handbound with fine paper covers (one cover is illustrated) by Michail Groman. Among the leaves are parts of articles about Grobman and the "Leviathan" group, leaves with Grobman's Curriculum Vitae, leaves with photos in color of prints created by Grobman (published by Jonathan a editions, Tel- Aviv), the manifests "Declaration of Leviathan A" and "Declaration of Leviathan B" as well as Grobman's personal documents: invitation to participate in a group exhibition in the Jerusalem Artists' House, a letter of appointment as head of unit, a letter from the National Security Institute, etc. Small illustrations by Grobman appear in both brochures – on both title pages an illustration of a whale (Leviathan) and on one of the brochures an illustration titled "Angel of Death". In one of the brochures appears a small drawing (ink on thick paper) by the artist Ivette Szczupak-Thomas; in the other brochure – collage by the artist Boris Yuhvetz (pencil and newspaper fragments, signed and dated 1984). Booklets: 33 cm. Good condition. Spots. 3-6. Four exhibition catalogues of “Leviathan Group”: · Michail Grobman, paintings, drawings, prints. Tel-Aviv Museum, 1972. · Leviathan, Uri and Rami Nechushtan Museum, October 1978. · Leviathan Group, Artists’ House Jerusalem, 1979. · Leviathan Group, from Symbol to Technology, shape-objectprogram. Jerusalem Theater, 1982.
