Wednesday Evening July 26th 1933 Pier 57 - North River - New York City." The back was signed by a number of people who were at the dinner: Julia Faye (1892-1966 - actress); Arthur Menken (newsreel cameraman for Paramount Pictures); Alfred Smith (1873-1944), four-time New York Governor and Democratic candidate for President (1928) and his wife, Catherine A. Smith; Louis Wiley; S(am?) Warner (possibly Sam, one of the "Warner Brothers"); Mitzi Mayfair (1914/1915 - 1976 - actress and dancer); J.A. Livingston (possibly the "JA" who was an economic columnist and would later win the Pulitzer Prize?); Florence S. Mooney; plus five more that are only partially legible. With a typed noted dated July 27, 1933 to Miss Wiley, signed (in type) only "emcc." There are letters from Governors: Benjamin Barker Odell (1854-1926) (34th Gov., followed TR), TLS dated 26 Jan. 1904; Alfred Smith (same as above), TLS dated 27 March 1925; Herbert H. Lehman (1878-1963), 45th Governor; and Thomas Edmund Dewey (1902-1977) 47th Governor, Republican candidate for President, defeated by FDR in 1944 and Truman in 1948, in spite of the Chicago Daily Tribune headlines that had "Dewey Defeats Truman." Two letters are from a Governor and an illustrator. Charles S. Whitman (1868-1947) was New York's 41st Governor (1915-1919), TLS dated 4 Jan. 1915 (just 3 days after taking office). The other note is on 4.75 x 7.75 in. paper with address header (502 Park Ave.), but no date. It is from Thelma Cudlipp Whitman thanking Miss Wiley for the lovely evening. Thelma Cudlipp was an artist and illustrator, with many pieces for Harper's, Century Magazine, McClure's, Saturday Evening Post. Her first husband was Edwin Grosvenor, cousin of William Howard Taft. After he died, she married Charles Whitman. Since that was 1933, this note must postdate that. Ely, Director of the League for Political Education, Inc., dated 3 Nov. 1934. ALS signed by Amos J. Cummings, on letterhead of the Board of Electrical Control dated 3 Dec. 1894.
