Letter from Charles Bukowski to Kirby Congdon Author: Bukowski, Charles Place Published: Los Angeles Date Published: 1963 Description: 2-page signed typescript letter on 2 sheets of paper, with an original drawing. A lengthy 1963 signed, typescript letter from Bukowski to poet/publisher Kirby Congdon, who served as Gregory Corso's unofficial agent in the early 1960s. He begins the letter writing of his tendency to be a loner, and to drink too much in social settings, particularly when in the company of other writers: "Anyhow, after drinking a while I tend to forget where I am...I begin to think I am at my place, I begin to throw glasses of whiskey against the walls...I had some trouble at Jack Hirschman's place too. He was a prof of English at UCLA and something about him bugged me." He writes about a number of drawings he is working on for Border Press, and then moves on to the subject of writers and fame: "I am sorry for the Ginsbergs and the Corsos because they are already placed on display and there's isn't anywhere to go. They asked for it by trodding the boards and now they've got it and it's killing them." He writes of the joy that playing the horses brings him: "So far I am unable to lose and it's so simple and basic and interesting that it's like fucking God." He signs the letter "Buk" and closes with a drawing of himself drinking at a table with a vase of flowers. In the postscript, he lists his latest publications, including Cold Dogs in the Courtyard, Confessions of a Man Insane Enough to Live with Beasts, and Poems Written Before Jumping out of an 8 Story Window. A thoughtful and rollicking Bukowski letter from the early 1960s with original art. Condition: Light edgewear, mild toning; very good. Item#: 358507 Headline: Bukowski typescript letter w/drawing 1963
