4 handwritten pages. 24.5x20 cm. (9½x7¾ in.) Self-enveloping. Letter from Daniel Hardy to Daniel Carr of Bradford, New Hampshire concerning Hardy's experience in the first year of the California Gold Rush. Hardy sailed from Boston to San Francisco (a voyage taking 189 days), arriving September 9th, 1849. He described city as "a beautiful place. The inhabertance [sic] of San Francisco lived mostly in tents altho [sic] the place is increasing very fast." After 10 days in the city, he and a partner headed for Stockton, within 40 miles of the mines, but reported he did not hear encouraging news coming from the mines at the time. Hardy also discusses the gambling, which he suspects takes up most of the miners' earnings. Information is given about the cost of foodstuffs in the mines ($6/dozen for eggs!) as well as an estimate of the number currently working (75,000 in the mines.) Hardy closes by advising his friend and any interested parties: "I will not advis [sic] any one to com [sic] heare [sic] who can get 50 cents a day at home."
