Title: Letter as 20 year-old teacher Author: Washington, Booker T. Place: West Virginia Publisher: Date: 1877 Description: Booker T. Washington. Autograph Letter Signed on 3 x 5" postcard, Malden, West Virginia, March 21 1877. Addressed by Washington on verso to General Samuel Armstrong [Hampton Institute], Hampton, Virginia. Possibly the earliest Booker T. Washington holograph to appear on the antiquarian market, written at age 20 at his West Virginia home, to which he had briefly returned to teach school (and work occasionally in the coal mines) after graduating from the Hampton Institute, where white Civil War General Armstrong was his mentor. He also paid to send his brother John to Hampton before Armstrong hired him as a teacher of both Black and Indian students. Five years later, on Armstrong’s recommendation, he was named the first Principal of the new Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. "Dear Genl, I regret that you had to write to me about my bill. It has been rather expensive on me to bear my brother John's expenses [here?] this year; this is the reason for my delay. I think I will be able to send you the whole am't this week. Don't like to send orders as greenbacks is due. I will do my best, Booker T. Washington." Lot Amendments Condition: Very good. Item number: 276273
