Left hand drive. The Corvette Sting Ray was introduced in 1963 and took its name and general shape from Bill Mitchell's late fifties racer, a car quite unlike anything else on the road. The new Corvette was fast, popular and handled well. Over the next few years it evolved through progressively cleaner styling, increased power and greater mechanical sophistication. This example was originally a special order for the owner of the Humphrey Chevrolet dealership in Milwaukee as a present for his wife, in November 1964. At the time GM workers had been on strike and new Corvettes were hard to find. This order did come through to the dealership, but instead of going to the dealer's wife, a Mr. Van Horn pressured the dealer to let him take it at full sticker price for Mrs. Van Horn. They titled the new car to their Florida winter home and used the car sparingly. It then passed to two further owners, both of whom realized the significance of the color combination and full list of options. Indeed, this Corvette is the only known example of a 1965 factory-built Ermine white exterior model with white leather interior, as documented by the trim data plate affixed to the car at the time of assembly. Just 9 examples from a production run of 15,376 Corvette Convertibles made in '65 were fully optioned such as this car. The list of options is exhaustive, with a 300bhp motor, power brakes, power steering, factory air conditioning, tinted glass, automatic transmission, AM/FM radio, white leather seats, teakwood steering wheel and a telescopic steering column. Furthermore, this is probably the only example to have original factory fitted Kelsey Hayes aluminum knock-off wheels and Goldline tires. The Corvette has all matching numbers (engine, transmission, radiator, alternator, voltage regulator, etc.) and has traveled less than 30,000 miles since new. It is a very early production car as indicated by the lack of seatbelt retractors and the low relief automatic shift button. The car still has its original window sticker, dealer pre-delivery prep sheet, warranty book with Protecto-plate and pre-delivery plastic seat covers. It was treated to a frame-off restoration and has since won both National Corvette Restorers Top Flight and Duntov awards, the Duntov being the most prestigious award that the NCRS issues. But perhaps the best option of all is the rare, and as supplied new, 45 rpm record player housed under the rear deck and cushioned by three internal shock absorbers to prevent skipping while the vehicle is in motion. The record player still operates flawlessly, playing a stack of up to 12 records upside down, by turning the unit on and tuning the radio to 80 on the AM dial. The sound is automatically routed to the dashboard radio speaker! There may be other high performance cars available, but this example is sure to create a stir at any gathering of Corvette enthusiasts. WITHOUT RESERVE
