LESS THAN 3,900 MILES FROM NEW 1971 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SL CONVERTIBLE SPORTS TWO SEATER Chassis No. 11304412023735 Silver with black leather interior and black canvas top Engine: six cylinder, overhead camshaft, Bosch fuel injection, 2,778cc giving 170bhp at 5,700rpm; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Suspension: independent front and rear; Brakes: four wheel disc. Left hand drive. The Super Light series of Mercedes sports cars began in the late 1950s with the 300SL and 190SL. The two series were a resounding success as both cars were mechanically sound, offered impressive performance and were very well styled. In 1963 both were replaced by the wider and more angular 2.3 litre 230SL. Within the next several years, engine modifications continued in the model and by 1967 the engine had grown to 2.8 litres. By that time the 230SL had been renumbered as the 280SL and included standard disc brakes as well as other driving comforts. The 280SL remained in production until 1971, by which time more than 23,000 units had been produced. Towards the end of 1971 a new shape had been adapted, taking form as the eight cylinder 350SL, a car many enthusiasts mark as the German automaker's departure from sports car production. The Mercedes-Benz on offer is quite possibly one of the lowest mileage 280SLs in existence. With a verifiable mileage of less than 3,900 original miles, this rare roadster is a virtual time capsule car. The original owner, Dr. George H. Ong, is described as an eccentric automobile collector who enjoyed buying cars new on the basis of a slight interest. Oddly enough, Dr. Ong was never licensed to drive. As a result, his cars were only actually driven when a friend would routinely exercise the cars at his request. It is reported that the owner was content to just go along for the ride. Apparently, Mercedes-Benz executives enjoyed the story so much they sent a crew to photograph and interview Dr. Ong. The 280SL is reported to be in immaculate, original condition having also benefited from meticulous care and preservation under Dr. Ong's ownership. This Mercedes is complete with many of the desirable accoutrements such as a complete and original toolkit, owner's manual and factory data card, as well as its warranty service card, original delivery booklets and guarantees. Receipts documenting the car's low mileage are also offered. Furthermore, with its desirable factory options like the Becker Mexico AM/FM radio, power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, 4-speed automatic transmission and factory original hardtop, this original, low mileage Mercedes-Benz 280SL is indeed a rare and collectible car. It is advised to the new owner that the tires may need to be replaced as the 280SL is still currently fitted with its original Continental 185HR14 whitewalls
