Trachten und Abb. von einem Bootsschlitten und Windkarren ("grote technische sensatie... van de Bruggeling Simon Stevin"; Eenheid L159 zur EA.); unten 32 kl. Stadtwappen sowie seitl. je 6 Ansichten im Oval von Amsterdam, Delft, Dordrecht, Enkhuizen, Haarlem, Leiden, Rotterdam u.a. Die Erstausgabe erschien mit Dat. 1622 und war den Bibliographen bis vor ca. 30 (!) Jahren unbekannt, obwohl immer vermutet wurde, dass es noch eine Ausg. vor 1633 geben musste, da Visscher die Karte Moritz von Oranien widmete, der 1625 verstarb. Von der Erstausgabe kennen Sch/St. mittlerweile 4 Ex. - Gereinigt und stabilisiert, noch leicht gebräunt und vereinzelt etwas fleckig. Seitlich bis an die Einfassung beschnitten, Unterrand etwas stärker fleckig und kl. Beschädigungen sorgfältig restauriert: kl. Einrisse und kl. Fehlstelle in alter Faltstelle unten am Bug hinterlegt und nachgezeichnet. One of the most famous and attractive maps depicting the Province of Holland as a rampant lion with sword in his left paw, surrounded by 12 town views, 32 small coat of arms of Dutch cities and scenery with costumed figures watching wind-powered wagons on the beach and an ice-sailboat on a frozen canal. "Michael von Aitzing originally introduced the lion as a symbol for the map of the Seventeen Provinces as a whole. Claes Jansz Visscher, however, composed the 'Leo Hollandicus' in imitation of von Aitzing's 'Leo Belgicus's, showing in this way the most powerful province of the Northern Netherlands in political, economic and financial terms" (S./S. p. 315). A copy of the first ed. of 1622 was only discovered c. 30 years ago, our copy in the third and last state with the date changed in 1648 (the second state is dated 1633). - Col. in full. Cleaned and sized, still light browning and some occasional spotting. Cut close to neatline at sides, lower margin with somewhat stronger spotting and with carefully restored small tears and small loss of image to old horizontal fold at lower center.
