C’est le deuxième ouvrage de Cendrars illustré par Léger après J'ai tué l'année précédente. “Cendrars hailed Léger’s first post-war exhibition at Rosenberg’s Galerie de l’Effort Moderne in 1919 as leading the way to an art devoted to colour and figurative subject matter. Léger illustrated the war prose J’ai tué of Cendrars in 1918; the writer was actively engaged in films at the time, and it was he and Dudley Murphy who produced Léger’s short film Ballet Mécanique in 1924” ( From Manet to Hockney 54).
