LEECH, JOHN. Album containing 7 sheets of original sketches and drawings (3 unsigned but apparently by Leech) of which two sheets containing a total of 38 small pencil and wash sketches, one sheet dated 1836; [ with :] Original drawing in gray wash for an unidentified illustration by F.O.C. Darley, showing a pair of young lovers in an eigtheenth-century interior, 217 x 173 mm. (8 1/2 x 6 7/8 in.) ; and 3 humorous watercolor drawings, of which two signed by W. Heath and one signed "HC", tipped in to recessed heavy cards or loosely inserted in a nineteenth-century album, oblong folio, maroon morocco gilt, rubbed, occasional minor soiling . CONTENTS OF LEECH DRAWINGS 1) 24 small sketches in pencil of various male figures, most with added wash coloring, including 2 equestrian scenes of the same character, on one sheet, inscribed in pencil "La Pastorale" by Leech and signed backwards twice, dated 1836 (also written backwards), 283 x 344 mm. (11 3/16 x 13 1/2 in.), slight marginal soiling . 2) A similar sheet with 14 sketches, signed backwards, 248 x 342 mm. (9 3/4 x 13 7/16 in.) 3) "The Opera. Box-keeper. 'Stalls 216 and 17, this way ma'am; last row ma'am. Won't you like a book, Ma'am?'", a corpulent lady being shown to her seat, pen-and-ink and watercolor, signed with monogram JL, 227 x 302 mm. (9 x 11 7/8 in.), short tear affecting a letter of caption, slightly soiled, traces of old mount on verso, loosely inserted 4) Pen-and-ink drawing of two ladies in crinolines walking along a beach, signed, 178 x 264 mm. (7 1/16 x 10 3/8 in.), corners cut obliquely (shaving signature), loosely inserted 5) "The industrious Boy", pencil sketch of a boy drawing under a parasol in a grove, unsigned, 181 x 118 mm. (7 1/8 x 4 5/8in.) 6) Rough pencil sketch of a man, unsigned, 121 x 74 mm. (4 13/16 x 2 15/16 in.) 7) Pencil sketch of a small boy, unsigned, 94 x 74 mm. (3 11/16 x 2 7/8 in.), foxed .
