Beschreibung:

Charles Lee Esqr. Major General of the Continental-Army in America .
London [but Augsburg]: C. Sheperd [but J. M. Will], 31 October 1775. Mezzotint, stated to be after a portrait by Thomlinsen, engraved by Johann Martin Will trimmed close (14 ¼ x 9 ½ inches, 360x240 mm overall). Condition: Some slight creasing in upper section of image. Matted. a wonderfully early print of general charles lee The image depicts Lee, dressed in military uniform, with a firing canon in the background and a flag with the slogan An Appeal to Heaven (though without an image of the Liberty Tree which was actually found on this Revolutionary flag). The portrait was executed and printed very early in the conflict with the expectation that Lee would play a major role in the impending war, an assumption based on his past military record in the French and Indian War. Indeed, it had assumed by some that Lee would serve as the commander in chief of the Continental Army instead of George Washington. The portrait actually bears little resemblance to contemporary accounts of Lee's appearance, but is one of a series of prints of American Revolution generals issued for the British public. This version of the portrait was reissued in Augsburg from the British original and is the second state or two. Cresswell, The American Revolution in Drawings and Prints 147; Russell English Mezzotint Portraits, and their States II, p.450.
