Boats on the River at Haouw, Egypt.
Haouw, [Egypt:] 1 March 1854. Sepia ink, pink and blue wash on tan paper (80 x 170 mm). Mounted and framed. Condition: slight offset to side edges. Provenance: Appleby Brothers, London (1965 exhibition label to frame). original lear drawing depicting boats moving along the river at haouw, with a large minaret in the background. Lear spent late 1853 and the spring of 1854 travelling Egypt. He executed many small drawings which are now in the "Lear Landscapes" collection at Harvard University. This drawing is closely related to a drawing in the Harvard collection of the same date that is timed at 9 am. A note on that drawing mentions the "pale blue sky" visible in the present drawing, as well as the white minaret. Here we see Lear's interest in both the labor activities of the Egyptians as well as the atmospheric changes along the river.
