Leaf from an English Book of Hours, Use of Sarum, with a miniature of a funeral scene, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment [England (probably London), c. 1420] Single leaf, with a large initial 'D' (opening "Dilexi quoniam exaudiet ..."., the Office of the Dead), in blue heightened with white penwork, enclosing a tiny portrait of a coffin draped with a black cross with a large white cross, surrounded by golden candlesticks and before a background heightened with liquid gold penstrokes, initial within a gold frame and with fleshy acanthus leaves and other foliage enclosing gold bezants forming a densely packed border on all four sides, one-line initials in blue or liquid gold with contrasting penwork, red rubric, single column of 14 lines of a notably spiky English late gothic bookhand, trimmed at edges and borders slightly thumbed, split in midpoint of outer margin, 102 by 73mm.
