Contemporary speckled calf gilt, a large central lozenge made up of small hand-tolls, within roll-tool borders, corners stamped with armillary sphere tool, spine in 9 compartments (rebacked, old spine laid down, some rubbing). Title printed in red and black with fully colored vignette dated 1693, world map in Mercator's projection "Carte generale de toutes les Costes du Monde," [Shirley 559, first state without Witsen’s name in the title], engraved and printed by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam (and issued with part 3, see below), engraved table of comparative nautical scales, 19 plates of ships (only 18 called for by Koeman), numbered 1-18 and one unnumbered plate), 12 plates of flags, and 29 hand-colored double-page charts of the coasts of northern and western Europe ALL WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING. (Lacking the engraved allegorical title, 21 maps with splitting in green pigment, some maps with minor loss, mostly repaired on verso.) First Mortier edition. Koeman M. Mor 1. Title printed in red and black, with fully colored vignette, 9 engraved charts by Romeyn de Hooghe (5 double-page of the French and English Channel coasts and a large folding chart of the Mediterranean incorporating finely detailed insets showing ports and harbors), ALL WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING. (Tiny split in green pigment of one map, foremargin of one map reinforced, a few short marginal repaired tears to Mediterranean map.) First Mortier edition. Koeman M. Engraved allegorical title ( Atlas Maritime... ) by Romeyn de Hooghe dated 1693, printed title with vignette of the coat-of-arms of Amsterdam, Suite du Neptune François dated 1700, engraved compass of the winds, 33 engraved charts (21 double-page and one folding) of Africa, Asia and the Americas (10 charts, including the Atlantic with northeastern coasts of South America and Africa, Central America, North America, East Coast from the Hudson to Labrador, and Canada), ALL WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING (folding plate with two repaired marginal tears, map of Carolina and Canada with marginal reinforcement, some marginal staining at end). First edition, plates of ships, flags and world map bound in before part one, without maps issued later by Covens and Mortier. Koeman M. Mor. 7 (the first edition containing 33 charts, see Koeman note 1). A FINELY COLORED COPY of one of the most beautiful of all maritime atlases. "The Neptune Francois in two parts and its third part Cartes Marines [prepared for the use of William III, who required accurate information for his war plans against France]... was the most expensive sea-atlas ever published in Amsterdam in the 17th century. Its charts are larger and more lavishly decorated than those of any preceding book of its kind... In 1700, Mortier brought out a third volume with charts of the outer-European waters... Suite du Neptune François. Apart from the first volume which had a second edition in 1703, none of the atlases was republished. This magnificent work was intended more as a show-piece than something to be used by the pilots at sea" (Koeman).
