LAWSON (HENRY) : Short Stories in prose and verse , 6 wood-engraved plates and decorations, some by B.E. Minns (3 marginal tape repairs, a few leaves frayed at the front, title slightly stained), original wrappers printed in red (early linen spine reback with some glue stain in margin of first leaf advert, gutter tight, short splits at crease near hinges, corners slightly frayed), 8vo, Louisa Lawson, Sydney 1894; 2 autograph letters signed by Lawson [one from James Gordon dated Coolac, New South Wales, 22 March 1920, 3 pages, praising his work as better than Lawson's own and advising him on getting the best price for his work from the Bulletin and Smith's Weekly and on being published by Angus and Robertson; the other is to Gordon's daughter, Jean, apologising for not visiting, undated 'Dam the date', one page, (some loss); both letters mounted on thick paper RARE. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF HENRY LAWSON'S FIRST BOOK, a selection of his work, printed and published by his mother Louisa on the press of her journal Dawn . Mackaness records 'of the original edition off 500 copies, many were accidentally destroyed by the sheets being blown of the cart on to the wet street while Lawson was taking them to the bindery'. Lawson himself records in his inscription in David Scott Mitchell's copy 'This is my first book. Only a few copies were published fortunately. I withdrew the book from publication. The book should be interesting as a curiosity of printing'. Louisa Lawson was one of Australia's earliest suffragettes. She started Dawn in 1888 announcing 'that it would publicise women's wrongs, fight their battles and seek their suffrage'. In 1889 she was employing ten women, including female printers, inspite of harrassment by the New South Wales Typographical Association. Dawn influenced public opinion towards women's suffrage. At the celebratory meeting after women were enfranchised in New South Wales in 1902 she was publicly acclaimed as the originator of the suffrage campaign. See Mackaness: Annotated Bibliography of Henry Lawson , 1; Miller p.660; ADB X pp.18-25. James Gordon 'who used the pen-name "Jim Grahame" was born at Creswick, Victoria in 1874. His varied outback experience included carrying his swag on the track with Henry Lawson', see Macartney Australian Literature p.199
