LAWRENCE, Thomas Edward (1888-1935). Autograph letter signed ('T.E. Lawrence') to an unidentified recipient [John Henderson, secretary of the National Liberal Club], 2 Smith Square, 23 February 1921, informing Henderson that 'I have agreed to join up temporarily with Mr Winston Churchill in his new Middle-East Department in the Colonial Office'; as Churchill is 'engaged at this moment in discussing his policy ... it would be impossible for me to make any statement on the subject independently', one page, 8vo .

Lawrence's appointment under Churchill enabled him to exert significant influence on the 1921 Middle East settlement, which placed Feisal on the throne of Iraq and Abdullah in Transjordan. It was to be his last official role before his escape into obscurity with the RAF, under the name of John Hume Ross.
