[which] are especially revealing of the Carchemish period' (O'Brien), comprising fifty-three letters from Lawrence to Leeds (the Assistant to the Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford), dating from 1909 to 1935, and relating principally to archaeological matters: 'This new information is interesting enough in itself -- but it is also extremely important in other ways. First, because it sheds new light on the early relationship between Lawrence and D.G. Hogarth, and, second, because it makes nonsense of the reasons suggested by some biographers for Lawrence's appointment to the British Museum's Carchemish excavations. The evidence is therefore immensely important' (J.M. Wilson, quoted in the prospectus). This copy is one of a small number in a designer binding which include proofs of the illustrations and 12 additional photographs taken by Lawrence (or under his direction) at Carchemish in 1911-1914.
