SEVEN PILLARS EDITOR, EDWARD GARNETT'S COPY The novelist, playwright and critic, Edward Garnett (1868-1937) was best known as editorial adviser to Jonathan Cape Ltd., who "discovered" Joseph Conrad, and encouraged numerous authors, including D.H. Lawrence and E.M. Forster. The two met when Lawrence contacted Cape, while trying to find a publisher for Doughty's Arabia Deserta . "Lawrence approached Garnett in 1921 and asked him to read the 'Oxford' draft of Seven Pillars . Garnett was impressed with the work, and wanted to help with its publication" (Wilson, p. 153). He worked on an abridgment of the Oxford text during the autumn of 1922, but the version was never published. It was Garnett, along with G.B. Shaw and E.M. Forster, who Lawrence turned to for literary advice for the 1926 Subscriber's Edition. In appreciation for all his encouragement, Lawrence dedicated The Mint to Garnett, as well as presented him with the original manuscript. This copy includes the 'Prickly Pear' plate, but not the two Paul Nash illustrations called for on pages 92 and 208, nor the extra Blair-Hughes-Stanton wood engraving (found in some copies illustrating the dedicatory poem; see previous lot).
