LAWRENCE, T. E. Autograph letter signed (“T. E. Shaw”), to Apsley Cherry Garrard, RAF Cattewater, Plymouth, 11 April 1929. 1 page, 4to, matte and framed with original envelope and photo of Lawrence . “IF THIS SORT OF THING GOES ON FOR ANOTHER TWENTY YEARS I SHALL FIND MYSELF TAKING MYSELF SERIOUSLY. WHICH WOULD BE A FIRST” Lawrence writes to the author of the classic Worst Journey in the World , his memoir of the 1910-13 Antarctic Expedition under Robert Falcon Scott. He expresses diffidence about his fame, in spite of seeking the obscurity of his Airman Shaw identity in the RAF. It reads in full: “Mr. Curtis turned up, and was very pleasant: asked me to dine at his hotel & we went to the local theatre and talked afterwards. So that is that. If this sort of thing goes on for another twenty years I shall find myself taking myself seriously. Which would be a first.” Of his reading he says, “Eos has been skimmed, & has been set aside for deliberate reading. It seems just about right for what the average man wants hear of cosmogony: so I shall benefit by it: and shall hand it on to the next bed, who will also hand it on. Some books do as many as 60 beds before they fall to pieces. Eos is written with a beautiful clarity & vigor. I’d like to stay, once, at Lamer. It has an astonishing feeling of being intact and undisturbed: and rich. Therefore perhaps your invitation really will be taken seriously. Which would also be a jest. It is very kind of you. Cottewater is a good place.
