Lawrence thanks Clayton for agreeing to Lawrence's suggestion that William Nicholson draw his portrait for use in Seven Pillars (see previous letter). "I'm afraid Lady Clayton won't like it, wives and mothers always hate their men's portraits." Referring to his book, he writes "I have printed five copies [the 1922 Oxford proof edition], of which Hogarth has a completed one. The others are mainly in a pile of loose sheets as yet. It's unfit to publish, for personal as well as literary reasons, but will wait well in that form till I'm ready to re-write it. I don't advise you to try to read the present edition, because there's some rather rough stuff in it, & it is very roughly printed, on a newspaper press. If you do actually want it, Hogarth would lend you his copy: or rather the copy in his hands, for I am not giving any away. I don't want people outside our group to know of it." On the news that Clayton is going to Palestine, he comments: "If any person of any race or creed anywhere in that country trusted one single person in the Government for two minutes, things there would be more stable. You'll do more than that!..."
