In addition to the above edition, there was one of 500 copies printed in the same year. "Both of [them] are genuine, and are even preferable to the original first edition, published by Secker, for they have the full introduction as originally written by Lawrence, and contain fourteen poems expurgated from that edition" (Fabes). It was thought prudent to use a private printer for the complete, unexpurgated edition because of concerns about pornography. According to a cutting from the Guardian newspaper (dated in manuscript 'June 14th '62'), some of the 50 copies were accidentally destroyed in the 1940s. The cutting also states that the frontispiece was one of two versions of a self-portrait by Lawrence, both of which were destroyed in an air-raid: 'The reproduced portrait is thus the only record of this attempt at self-portraiture.'
