LAURO, Giacomo (fl. 1584-1637). Citta dell'Aquila . Rome: 1600 Engraved bird's-eye plan of L'Aquila on a single Royal sheet, 382 x 512mm. Title at upper centre, key in a cartouche surmounted by the arms of the dedicatee, Fernando de Casteo, Conde de Lemos, at left, arms of L'Aquila at upper right corner, royal arms of Spain, arms of the dedicator Blas Pico. (Trimmed to plate mark and window-mounted, some light dampstaining.) A RARE AND FINE PLAN OF AQUILA. Lauro was an acomplished Roman engraver. Amongst other works he is particularly known for his Antiquae urbis splendor , a four volume work dedicated to King Sigismond of Poland, published in Rome from 1612 onwards, and a fine map of ancient Rome, Roma antiquae triumphatrix (see lot 1034). Lauro also engraved a plan for a proposed canalisation of the Tiber (see lot 1046). This detailed plan shows L'Aquila's urban structure enphasizing its principal monuments, from the Palazzo del Magistrato, and the castle, to the famous fountains. No watermark.
