Collation: a-l 8 m 1 0 (a1r blank, a1v printer's address to Julius Pomponius, a2r Compendium octo orationis partium , m9r colophon, m9v-10 blank). 97 (of 98, without final blank) leaves. 31 lines, double column, parallel text in Greek and Latin. Types 1:119(125)R, 3:125Gk. 5-line initial space on a2r. (Neatly repaired tear in first leaf, a few other repaired minor tears, lower inner blank margin of last two quires renewed, final leaf mounted, washed.) Late 18th-century tan morocco gilt, gilt edges (very lightly rubbed at extremities). Provenance : RICHARD COPLEY CHRISTIE (1830-1901), bequeathed to; Manchester, Owens College (later University of Manchester), John Rylands University Libary (stamp and deaccession label, sale Sotheby's 14 April 1988, lot 47). SECOND EDITION of Lascaris' important Greek grammar, and the FIRST EDITION of the Latin translation. It is printed with Accursius's second Greek type, which was used to print only 5 books; a recast of it on a smaller body was later used by Scinzenzeler. The fount shares characteristics with scribes of the Gregoropoulos family and of Thomas Bitzimanos, and may have been modelled on the hand of one of them (cf. N. Barker, Aldus Manutius and the Development of Greek Script and Type , 1985, p.35). 'The reason for the change of type is not so easy to discover, and it is certain that Bonus Accursius had the use of a skilful designer and type-cutter for the new fount is in no degree inferior to the old, while its larger sixe and the increased independence and self-reliance of its letters mark it as in many respects an advance on its predecessor' (Proctor, The Printing of Greek in the Fifteenth Century , 1900, p.62). Constantine Lascaris was a pupil of John Argyropoulos when Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1453. In Milan he taught Greek and copied Greek manuscripts, but from about 1465 he was at Messina, where he taught the future Cardinal Pietro Bembo and where he died from the plague in 1501. He bequeathed his personal library to the city of Messina, and it survives, including 76 Greek manuscrips, at the Biblitheca Nacional in Madrid.
