Title: Large collection of Harper's Magazine featuring illustrations by N.C. Wyeth Author: Place: New York Publisher: Harper & Brothers Date: 1896-1921 Description: 4 individual issues and 6 bound volumes. Profusely illustrated with color and black and white plates, from photographs, advertisements, text illustrations, etc. (8vo), individual issues in illustrated wrappers, other volumes in various bindings of cloth, leather and boards. Collection of individual issues and bound volumes of Harper's Magazine, spanning the years of 1896-1921. The selected volumes feature artwork by N.C. Wyeth, generally on color and black and white plates accompanying works of fiction. Many other popular artists of the day are featured throughout as well. Some of the present volumes include installments of Mark Twain's The Mysterious Stranger, as well as work by other popular artists of the day. Launched in June 1850, Harper's is the second-oldest continuously published monthly magazine in the U.S. The early issues reprinted material pirated from English authors such as Charles Dickens and the Brontë sisters. The magazine soon was publishing the work of American artists and writers, and in time commentary by the likes of Winston Churchill and Woodrow Wilson. Portions of Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick were first published in the October 1851 issue. Collection sold as is. Individual issues: December 1904. October 1916. June 1916 (includes an installment of The Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain). December 1921. Bound volumes: Volume XCIV: December, 1896, to May 1897. Volume CXXVIII: December, 1913, to May 1914.
